Odometer works!!! Kinda....
« on: May 30, 2009, 07:26:54 PM »

I got a visit from my pal Dan Cluley Friday afternoon,He pulled the Speedo out of Ruby and we messed with it cleaned it and he swapped in a new (good used) odometer assembly tested it with a drill, put new bulbs in the dash and the heater control, reinstalled everything adn went for a test drive, It worked great, for a few miles till it had to move two numbers then stopped again!!!
Today,(Saturday May 30th) The wife says,"Lets go take a ride in Ruby." So we go and lo and behold the odometer starts working again!!! then it went from 47819 to 47820 and got stuck halfway in between 19 and 20!!! So I'm bummed again.

So we keep driving and next thing I know it working again!!!! It made it to 478930 with out any problem so maybe it just has a problem with the 1's and 2's but for now its working and all the dash lights are nice and bright!!! Plus as an added bonus we put bulbs in the blinker indicators in the dash so now I have fender mount blinkers and green lights in the dash!!!!

And my hi-beam indicator and E-brake light work now too!!!

Thanks Dan!!! I owe ya!!!

Glad to help Arlen.   :)

This is what the insides of the speedometer look like.

#2 is a nylon shaft with a gear at the bottom end, and a worm at the top.  #1 is the end of a similar shaft that runs horizontally from the main shaft (the one the cable screws into) to shaft #2

Arlens original one had some of the teeth worn off the end of shaft #1, so we swapped the assembly circled in yellow with a spare I had.

From what I saw on Fri, and what Arlen describes from Sat, it seems to be having some trouble with the point where the first number drum has to bump the second drum ahead.  Since it seems to be working more, I'm hoping that it is just stiff from not working for so many years and will get better.

Steve,  As to your 413 project, see this thread http://www.moparfins.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2517&PID=33267#33267
On the other hand, if you were say 8 or 9 hours closer, I'd be glad to help.

I was just kidding.  I'm going to drill this block out and tap bolts into it.  Paint it Blue and have a nice day.
