I double checked, I was wrong,  John's car is a 3 tone, so that
may be a super rare variant, if indeed an original Coronado - I'd ask
over at the National DeSoto Club website, they'd know for sure. Just
google it.

DeSoto Coronado
The DeSoto Coronado was a trim option on the 1954 Firedome and 1955 Fireflite 4-door sedans (if available on other styles I'm not aware of it). 1955 Coronados were only 4 door Fireflite sedans in three colors, black, turquoise and white.
Leslie Howard wrote: The 1955 DeSoto Fireflite Coronado was only available in the tri-tone color scheme (with a bright green, white top, and black side-spear) or turquiose, white, and black in any main, roof, sweep combination. They featured the Fireflite Sportsman leather and cloth interiors on them, which were not available on the standard Fireflite sedans.
Try and find out if the interior is/was leather.Commando12009-06-02 10:50:31

Also, wouldn't the Coronados have the script on the fenders?

One of the badges is on the fenders. Who's not to say that it wasn't put there by someone else, though. The interior is the correct white leather and turquoise cloth. This interior was also available in the sportsman. I'll have to decode my info plate on the firewall (did they have them in 55?) and see what it says. I found codes, but they are all in reference to the coronado green/surf white/black tri-tone paint combination. I'd like to get ahold of chrysler historical before they are gone, and get some information on the car. Will have to do that soon!

PS. I put a downpayment on the car today. The seller is holding until I am able to transport the car-- likely in August.

Owner confirmed the script hanging off t he fender to be the coronado badge.

The interior is pretty shot. Time to break out the sewing machine!

I am waiting for the owner to email me the VIN # and the data plate from the cowl. Time to do some homework and get to the bottom of that 2-tone mystery. Right now I am trying to organize my information so I can develop a pretty good game-plan.
Eventually i'll be yankin' on stitcher bob's ear while trying to sew new seat covers, but i've always wanted to learn how to do interior work. First thing is first, though: I need to get the mechanical end smoothed out before the fun/glitzy stuff.

Mystery solved. Car was repainted at one time as the data plate shows. Code 431 indicates a black roof, surf white body, and coronado green sweep.

They were anticipating California's proposed ban on black cars.

I am thinking along the lines of maximizing AC efficiency. Or.. they just didn't like the 3-tone. :)
