Yesterday I was driving Eilleen ( the 65 Windsor) and when I came to a corner the brake pedal jumped down a bit..

Then a few miles down the road I smelled brake.. When I got home the left rear drum was CRAZY hot..

I'm wondering if this sounds like a wheel cylinder that let go or maybe a return spring..

Do they still make drums for these cars?

My best guess would be a return spring, If a wheel cylinder let go there would be fluid leaking out. As far as I know drums are avalible (probably from NAPA) but you may not need a drum just a spring kit to replace the broken one. the old drums have a lot of metal in them and are pretty forgiving.ardog2009-05-10 10:48:21

A common problem is the self adjuster cable snaps and throws  the adjustment out.
Another scenario is they adjust up too much on their own and heat up the drum..Had that happen to me on my 68 VIP.
Pull the drum off and have a look see.If it does not slide off easily,back down the adjuster through the backing plate..
Like R says,a spring may have popped out.
Or the park brake lever is jammed.That will cause your pedal to drop.
Get a new combi kit (cheap) clean and adjust.
Drums are more tolerant of heat compared to modern day offshore rotors..
If anythingg needs nothing or a light skim on the brake lathe.

Sounds like a good time to have a luck at all four... when you only put a few thousand on a year you sometimes forget about routine maintenance..

I should check the ball joints and tire rods while it's up in the air too..

These guys hit the nails right on the head.
 
FYI, Parking break cables are very common in the rust belt.  I found if I soak them in oil for a few days, they will be as goos as new.  Used oil is better becayse it has acids in it.  It will chew on the rust, but nothing else.  When you take it out, let iy hang for a day or so to drip dry.
 
Change the car with the Cat Converters Oil.  That's usually a good shot.
