re-arch leafs or go new?

After getting the rear end rebuilt in my 70 Fury....The mechanic pointed out something that needs attention. When I bought the barge almost three years ago I put a band-aid on her...the rear air shocks. Her butt was dragging (and still is if I let the air out of the air-shocks)...Well...He pointed out that the lower shock bushings are now compressed on the lower side down to almost nothing...There's obviously a lot of force on those lower shock studs to push the rear end up! It's nearly metal to metal (shock to studs) under there on both sides...so I figure I should do something with the rear leafs...What should I do? Buy new?..... or go to my local auto spring shop and get them re-arched+add 1 leaf.....phone quote = $300.00 to do the re-arch...pros/cons anyone??

re-arc keeps it 100% stock.  Depending on who does it, they last not quite as long as new.


New from Alcan is about $400.00 + shipping/Pr.  Well they were last year.  Eaton was 800.  Twice the price and you pay for arrogence too.

Charles at Alcan will make you anything you want.  I haven't a clue who re-arcs up your way

Thruway Auto-Spring in Rochester, NY or as you know it...Roachester.... or as I know it..Rotnfester  So you think I should go for the re-arch + 1 added new leaf? They also said they could lift it to: right where I want it...I'm thinking this will cure my rough ride and give the shocks a break too...

$300 for a re-arch is about right.  So, for the cost, do what is best for you.  I would like to buy new but the cost wll eventually lead me to my decision.  If you can afford the new ones - go for it!

If you decide to get new, make sure you get U bolts too.
 
Not sure what Alcan is getting for springs these days, but I paid $425 for a custom set for Polaraco.
 
If you are in a rush, I have a brand new set here for the VOAB you can borrow. . . Just replace them.  I may be running up that way soon too.

I went with new mains,and added a leaf.
I was lucky since I scored the last NORS set of mains between Edmonton and Montreal.
 
Re-arching is a band-aid and will sag again over time.
Especially if the car does a lot of sitting.
 
I am with Polaraco,go with Alcan new jobbies.For the extra 125.00 over the 300.00 re-arching,you will much happeir in the long run.

The only problem I can think of if you go re-arching is spring failure-had a set break on a78 Fury B-body-that was before I could get them re-arched-New is the only way for me. Have you checked out Just Suspensions for rear Leaf prices???

I just checked on-line...they don't list leafs for 70 Fury...? I plugged in 70 Fury springs...only 4 items came up..(shackles)?? I'll have to give them a call... Steve, that's an awful nice offer...I'm in no hurry though buddy. I'll start searching around for some new springs...maybe I could even find some locally to save on the shipping?....Probably wishful thinking....Thanks for all the input guys...I do appreciate it...

Thanks Lea...Yes, I checked the Alcan site per Steve's advice right before your post...I also filled out the request form. We'll see what they say. I do believe the guy at my local Thruway auto Spring said he could get new ones as well...for ~ $400.00 or so...not sure if that was installed or not though..probably not...

Install them yourself.
It is not that hard.
Get new U-bolts and hardware.
If you need new rear shackles kits,use Mopar Performance #P4120076.They can be modified to use on Fusey cars with the offset shackles.

Support the car,and also support the rear axle.Have one axle stand under the diff right behind the u-joint-it is the heaviest and will droop down.
Disconnect the shock's lower nuts
I always cut the old U bolts.95% the nuts will not break loose or just break off the u-bolts anyways.They are under tension so do not be alarmed when they "SNAP!"
Then remove the 4 nuts in the front leaf spring torque box.(If they break,no big deal,just get the right size nuts/bolts or go to a fastener place and get the correct stud.)
Spring will drop down.
Remove the shackle from the rear of spring from car.
Once they are out from the car, you will have room and leverage to remove the big nut holding the torque box onto the spring.Ditto rear shackle.
 Once yo uechanged the parts onto the new springs,installation is simply the reverse.
Barring no complications,it should take a couple of hours.
As a rule of thumb,I recommend new shocks at the same time if they are old.

Here's a pic after the spring was removed.Note axle is well supported,and so is the car..

Now it looks all purdy under there..(I still have to trim the U-bolts,eh)

Hey CBarge, looks great.  Do you cut off the extra threads on the u bolts? Seems like they would get in the way...of what I don't know.

I always get them made a little long  "just in case"
