Yet Another Snake!!!
« on: April 01, 2009, 05:45:15 PM »

I don't know what it is about me and snakes but I caught another one today. It's a Red Racer. Found it in my front planter. Let him go in my back pasture. I hope he feasts on the many Gophers that live back there.

Common name: Red Coachwhip or Red Racer
Size:  24.4-54.3 in (62-138 cm)
Distinguishing characters: A species with highly variable
dorsal coloration; tan, grey, red, or pink with bold black or brown
crossbars or blotches on neck which may blend together; venter pink;
slender body and tail; large eyes with round pupils; often described as
a red snake with a black head.
Juveniles: Black, brown or tan transverse bands on lighter
background; black neck markings absent in hatchlings and faint in
juveniles less than 24 in (61 cm) in length.
Dimorphism: None
Similar species:  Masticophis lateralis:  Has distinct yellow lateral stripes.
Additional notes: A fast moving diurnal snake that is
difficult to capture. Bites, excretes musk and twists body when
handled. Large individuals should be handled with caution.

Chris, It's good to see you! (even if you have a big ol' snake in your hands). I'm still working on my 318...almost ready to put the new timing cover on it. Thanks again for pointing me right to the source of my coolant leak (into the crankcase). I'm sure you've saved me countless hours of frustration working/fixing this problem. I really appreciate your advice...As far as the snakes go? I guess I'd rather have them than all the little pain in the arse mice and moles we have over here in  the NYS countryside. Why don't you ship some of those snakes to me...They'll take care of my problem here.  Thanks again....and like Steve says...it's always great to put a face with the name....

That's a beautiful animal Chris.  Sadly, Reptiles and Amphipians are in precipitous decline all over the US.
