Theory question to become reality
« on: March 11, 2009, 08:23:07 PM »

Specs

Magnum Engine 5.2 vs 5.9

5.2 (318)   220 HP  300 Ft Lb Torque  Intake Valve: 1.88"   Exhaust Valve:  1.60"
5.9 (360)   245 HP  335 FT LB Torque  Intake Valve: 1.88"   Exhaust Valve   1.62"

My current Cam is a 236 Int/242ext duration  This is a 500 to 5000 RPM Street Cam

OK  Looking at all this, it looks like it would be no problem.  Just a slight exhaust valve difference.

So

I acquired a 5.9 Magnum Complete, cheap.  Have been hunting all over for one.  When I last talked to EBugger, he said the car is screaming for a 360.  Maybe it is.  I have been saying the HP to weight has been a bit light all along.  I am estimating the Polaraco 5.2 to be in the 250 HP range.

What I am thinking of, instead of the blower is building the 5.9 block to new again and adding the right cam.  Then looking at the breathing it has, maybe going to a 4 BBL throttle body with the MPI injection.  Then maybe a computer system.  ODP2 possibly.

This is what I want to do

I would like to get into the 300 HP range, without dropping a lung.  I am going to try to maintain my MPG at the same time.  I have heard it could possibly go up.

I can use the same heads.  Everything else on the 5.2 I can reuse.  The Hughes Intake is an example.  I have a set of Hedman headers on it too.

I need some help choosing the right cam to do the job.

Help me choose the right cam.

I nominate Velcro as the official motor mount of the Polaraco!

Download the Comp Cam Camquest software.  It's usually right on the money.

Link to free cam selection software

I didn't think there was that much difference in the HP between the two.

No I had that idea for a long time before you brought it up.  I just finally did it.  But then again, other than changing oil, I have been under the hood in a very long time either.  That means it was done.

But the trunks not.

Well there isn't much.  Remember, it's still 40 more cubes bigger.

According to the software I got, (Thanks Stan) if I use what I already have on the motor, and the right cam, I can easily get it over the 300 HP range.

Since there is practically no difference in the exhaust valves, I see no problem reusing my heads.  Maybe a little bit of porting.  I have headers on it, the right exhaust system and the Hughes Air Gap intake.  The only other thing I can do is go to a 4 Barrel air intake vs. the 500 CFM 2 Barrel.  It looks like all I need to do is build a block and choose a different cam.  I could probably get close to 300 out of this motor.  But as said, many times, "There is no replacement for displacement"
