200 MPH Speedo in 58 Plymouth Fury ???
« on: March 09, 2009, 03:33:04 PM »

The previous owner does not know much about it other than it had the big engine with 2 four barrel carbs. She said it was built for the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) that sounded
fishy to me, but I bought the car regardless because it was in good shape to restore.
Police - NASCAR racing - Export to Canada (any documented proof that they were sent with KPH spedos)?

This is a 3-speed colum shift, AC delete, Defrost holes on top of dash have factory block-off plates never removed...

Car has been painted 3 times:
Bottom coat is White-done right, still some showing under rear seat and under some interior trim,etc..
Metallic Blue-done right...some under glass rubber, door hinges, doors, etc..
Red-most recent and a terrible job

I noticed the fuel and temp guages do not have any numbers on them - just like the cars have now. Seems a little odd as well.  I'd guess a kilo speedo and an export car.300Rag2009-03-09 20:00:17

BTW,WELCOME LOGIC2
Good chance the car was built for European export.
They have been using KPH for many many years.
That also explains the universal script on the temp and fuel guages instead of Fahrenheight on the temp guage and E/F on  the gas guage.
CVhrysler products were good sellers in Europe for many years and have a strong following today.

No, they're the same in the US.  They tried to keep the cars simple.  People allegedly knew less about cars than they do today. . .  Notice I said allegedly

I thought there were no canadian a/o export Plymouth NAMEPLATE models in 57/58.  They were called DeSotos and Dodges over/up there.

I'm betting it was a diplomat's car sent over there with the speedo converted.  State Dept.  IRS.  Possibly where the original owner got confused.

The Fury was not available in Canada in 1957.
Yes Dodges built in Canada shared bodies with Plymouth with Dodge front clips.
The Windsor plant did build Plymouths for export to South Africa,Austrailia and Europe

Stan, what's the story behind that converted cluster you posted?  Inquiring minds want to know?

I was Googling images for 1958 Plymouth speedometers and that popped up. I just thought it was cool.

I have a 200km/h speedo in my 73 Imperial, which was originally delivered in Switzerland. According to the tags, it's US-built, but some final assembly took place in Switzerland in order to avoid very high import duties on complete cars).

The main problem I have with it, is that 200 is a bit limited. A 220 or 240 scale would be more useful.

Mike, I copied and pasted your question and photos in a post over at Plymouth Rock Restorations. Check it out:

http://www.phpbbplanet.com/plymouthrockres/viewtopic.php?t=912&mforum=plymouthrockres

The consensus over there is that you have a K/H speedo and most likely it was a European export. They also think you have a Belvedere not Fury...If it was a Fury it would have a 240 K/H speedo (+ other Fury only stuff). Hope this info. helps you..

PS...Mike, The guys over at Plymouth Rock reminded me to tell you that you'll need to choose a screen name and password (become a member) to see this thread. I forgot about that...sorry...I'd encourage you to do this as well...because you now own exactly what that site is all about....1958 Plymouths.

It's also missing the push button shift pod at the L side of the dash,
it usually had a pod with blanking plate on manual shift cars... there
was some discussion of this on FLnet last fall by our Rick and others,
apparently one did show up somewhere without the pod.
