58 Fury Heavy Duty Suspension
« on: January 12, 2009, 03:49:08 PM »

Does anyone know if all 58 Furys had heavy duty suspension as standard equipment?

I've heard that it included thicker torsion bars and an extra leaf in the rears...anything else?

Diameter on the heavy duty torsion bars vs. standard bars...Thanks, Bob

Heavy Duty Rear Leafs..how many vs. Standard Rear Leafs..how many?

Here's the specs page in the 58 brochure....

Don't see any options for an HD suspension but then again the Fury had it's own Brochure too.

If you can read it that is!   I do have it in a large scan & can e-mail it to ya.

'58 Furys were used as cop cars in some states.  Usually such cars do have stiffer suspension - would that appear in a standard brochure?  Are there other sources of info out there?

"...the
'58 Fury was Plymouth's factory hot-rod and luxury car all combined
into one superior automobile.  Under the hood, buyers had a choice of
either the 290hp 318ci Dual Fury V-800 or the 305hp 350ci Golden Commando V8 which was hailed as "the greatest triumph of Plymouth engineering!"
Standard equipment on the Fury included: an 8-barrel carburation
system, dual exhausts, heavy-duty Torsion-Aire suspension, bumper
wings, dual outside rear view mirrors, 150 MPH speedometer, padded dash
& sun visors among a few other options.  When you drove a 1958
Plymouth Fury, you were king of the road!

Thanks Butch, I received your copied page of the brochure through e-mail. I can read it now..Thanks. I appreciate that very much. There's more info. to be found though, as you've mentioned.  I did find some things on e-bay like you suggested too. I've sent out some general questions to the sellers...hoping to purchase the right information. Did see the repro. 58 Plymouth operators manual too...not sure if that would have what I'm looking for or not. I may get it anyways..be nice to have it with the car. Thanks again...Bob

Furys all had bigger brakes than,,,,,,,,,,.
I should say,,,, the 350 GC OPTION, came with bigger brakes.
Don't ask what size, for it's too late and I can't remember.  2 1/2 or 3, X 11 (?)

The 350 GC motor was an OPTION on EVERY '58 Ply, line up
(There were 400 and some 350 equipped '58 convts!)
(approx 250 some of the Furys had the GC motor option)

The GC motor option, came with the bigger shocks, toristion bars, brakes, cooling, and the extra 1/2 leaves in the rear.  Also, the 150 speedo
