My Dad was on an escort carrier, left San Diego and stopped in Pearl 3
months after Dec 7, and spent the entire war in the S. Pacific down in
the engine room since he was a mechanical engineer in training when the
War started. His ship USS Coral Sea, later USS Anzio when the new big
carrier was named Coral Sea, was torpedoed and hit by a kamikaze, but
they kept her afloat. They made it to Tokyo Bay to see the surrender.
