Electronic Ignition Ballast Resistor
« on: December 05, 2008, 04:21:44 AM »

Anyone know when the Ballast Resisitor went from 2 wire to a 4 wire
with the built-in auxiliary .5v ballast resistor,  and why?
Always carry a spare in the glove box!

IIRC,the dual ballast began at about
73-74.
On models equipped with dual ballast, voltage is limited by a pair of resistors.
Primary  for the coil,of course, and the auxilary side limits the voltage to the ECU.This is usually the "5 pin" type ECU set-up.
Some models were equipped with a speed limiter curcuitry to prevent engine damage from excessive RPM's
When doing an electronic ignition conversion on a  car use a single ballast and 4 pin ECU.

Yeah,Yeah.I get that all the time, bleh,LOL
Electronic Ignotion did use the dual ballast for a short (hic) time right before the Lean Burn system appeared.IIRC,all Lean Burn cars had dual ballasts.

My 1974 Dart with 318 has a factory electronic ignition with the 4 wire resistor and the 5 pin box.

According to the FSM that should be the case for all '74 models.
