'58 DeSi in Mothballs for winter
« on: November 23, 2008, 11:31:43 AM »

Snapped a couple of pix this afternoon between snow showers of my
trusty rollback man Walter hauling Desi, my '58, off to winter storage
about a 1/2 mile away in a rented garage, always a sorry sight,
signifying that winter is truly here.  I got some stuff done this
year but hope to do much more, beginning with new floors, starting in
late March when the glaciers recede...  Meanwhile, Rose St. Reeege
will go in Desi's heated space so I can do detailing and touch up and
general service work this winter in comfort... my C...y Nova is in
there too,  getting new rockers.

Pics in next post, 'cause I don't see the little tree here...

That's what dry ice is for.  We can always send snow balls to Cali

I'll bet that car got a lot of looks on it's way to it's igloo...

Roger...Sorry...I guess I've been a little too focused on my own stuff to notice this thread. Not good...Anyways...nice old Desoto you have there. It's hard to believe it needs floor work...probably not very much right?....It looks completly solid. Very nice looking car...in my opinion that was the best looking year for them. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on the ol' girl...Keep us posted...even with the small stuff. Let's get these fins on the road!

Thanks Bob! Ya, as a fellow NYer, you know the frustration of being a
car guy here... I have to transport the '58 to storage every fall, so I
can use my garage for drivable cars - the 80 St Reege and 70 Nova (not
a mope but an original family car bought new) , that I can get out of
there if I need to work on one of our daily drivers (various ferrin
Svenska-mobiles that get good gas mileage and are also safe) during the
cold weather... I have enough kerosene heat to work anytime I have to.
Frustrating not to be able to work on the car I want to!! It comes out
in 4 weeks... yay!!  To me it's process over product that is fun,
I like driving em but I love doing bodywork, that's my thing. But only
when I can put the doors up and let out all the welding, lead, and
paint fumes.  My sons like doing mechanical work, so we swap labor
on each other's cars.  It does need some floor work, all
non-Western FLs do, in my experience. But only has 38k original PA
miles and is very solid overall... will get more pics when he comes out
of hibernation.

I cheated today Roger...Being a nice dry, sunny but cold day today, I took my 70 Fury out for a spin. Man....that car loves the cold weather. I don't know what it is, but that ol' 318 sure seems to run even better when it's cold out...I'm sure you know, but for the others....Today the high was 19-20 deg. F and boy with the wind it felt it! (even with the sun). I really enjoyed getting her out...I got the thumbs up from quite a few guys too! Winter makes me appreciate my old cars even moreso...especially when I first get em out...

It's finally warming up some,  supposed to hit 50 by this w/e, and in 40s next week, so it won't be long!

Cars do run better in cold if the choke works and once the engine warms
up, the O2 density is higher so it's breathing better at colder temps,
like getting some free extra cfm thru your carb, long as the mixture is
right.
