TC's T/C...update..Aug 2012

Well I've been slowly puttering away on the car.....installed the mini starter, built my own main battery cables from junkyard pieces, installed horns and relay....man they don't give you much room to bolt those suckers in.....

Serviced tranny and installed a drain plug, installed new plugs since the manifolds are off.....I had forgot how long it takes to service plugs with the manifolds ON...

Forgot to put the tranny lines in before I bolted the motor in...took some bending and twisting to get them in place...."Mental Note on that one."

Repaired all the dry rotted rubber fuel line pieces and installed 2 fuel ffilters, ione before the fule pump and one after.

Installed new-er valve cover bolts, removed from mid eighties M-bodies...the ones with the captured triangle metal pieces to distribute the load....thought I'd see if these might help with vavle cover leakage.

I also decided last night I would hook up the kick down linkage, I assumed everything would be fine since the 71 and 68 are both C-bodies......NOPE....the single rod kickdown style of the 71 does not work on a 68 C-body.....lack of firewall clearance....so now I'm on the hunt for a 68 440 kickdown set-up. (See my want ad.)

Still lots to do the holiday season really slowed down my progress....

Hope to have it running and driving in another month or so.

Awsome work Brian!, Changing plugs with the manifolds on is a real pain
in the butt, that I know first hand. Keep up the progress and the ol
girl will be humming down the road soon enough.

It just occured to me I have a 68 440 and trans.  What was it you needed?

The engine is going into VOAB with a 4 speed so it won't be needed.  I am hoping to start tearing into the engine in the next week or 2.  I may have to run up to storeage to get you the rod.  Be patient with me. . . It's really hard to get the simplist of tasks done anymore.

Hey Steve....If your willing to sell the complete kickdown assembly I'll bite....I really need everything, from intake braket, all 3 kick down rods and all brackets and clips,  BUT I could make some of the pieces I have work.

If you need an intake bracket I can send you a spare one off the 71 440.

Let me know.

I have the 2 rods and the bracket here still on the engine.  I have to go up to my storage and look on the trans for the other stuff now.

I have a spare one off the 71 440....might not be 100% correct style for a 68 but will function fine.  If you want it I'll send it your way.

Well got the kickdown sorted out, the set is off a 62 413 and is identical to the 68 set-up expept for the clips used on the lower rod ends, and the rods are thicker as well.

I have everything under the hood hooked up, less the A/C lines, just using the compressor as a pulley right now until I can install my new Bouchillion bracket kit for my Sanden compressor and the bouchillion under hood A/C kit.

The motor is read too fire but I have yet to sort out the exhaust and I'm presently working on the rear end.  I pulled the original 741 case with 2.94's and have installed a set of 3.23's in a 489 case.   Also pulled off the 11x2 rear drums and I am installing 11x2.5's instead, more parts available for these.

So once the rear is done, the drive shaft is in I can finally fill the tranny, and then fab up some temporary exhaust, good enought to get through Gov't insp. and then I can take it in to get NEW dual exhaust installed with my HP manifolds!!

So hopefully a couple more weeks and she'll be running and driving...then I still have to check the front brakes and make sure everything else on the car is ready for inspection.

Is that the Serpentine system you are talking about?

No just the brackets to mount the Sanden compressor in the right location to still run the V-belts.  Then the new under hood A/C stuff, all the lines and fittings, drier, switches and condensor.

Dang

I was looking for someone who had done that conversion. . . Wanted to see how well it worked and if it was worth it or not.

Thanks!

Well I finished up the rear end today, got the drive shaft in and filled the tranny.  Even though I have no exhaust on the car, just open manifolds, I couldn't resist cranking it over to see if she would fire up.....

We'll once the carb filled it fired right up!!!  No sputter, no fuss, no muss....

I only ran it for about 30 seconds but sounded good....I'm very happy and can't wait until I can take her around the block.  This is the first she's run in over 6 years, hasn't had a motor or tranny until a couple months ago.

Looking forward to seeing the a/c install. I looked on bouchillon's site and i'm very  impressed with the a/c conversion kit they offer (from the firewall out). Pretty sure that's the way i'm heading with my a/c system next winter. Thanks for being the guinea pig...

I will be going with the A-Body under hood kit, since on my 68 T/C the A/C lines enter through the firewall behind the motor on the pass. side, much like the A-Bodies do.  So with the 90 degree connections out of the firewall it should clear everything.  I will then run the hoses along the firewall and up over the passenger side inner fender to the compressor and drier etc.

I'm not sure when this will get done, hopefully before next winter.

Ya got me all quivering with the thoughts of cold a/c. Cruising around on a hot sunny day in a black convertible with the top and windows up would be "Too Cool". The 66 exits the firewall the same as your 68, right behind the r/side valve cover. Can't wait to see how it all pans out for you...
