After reading his description on the car,I beleive he has been lurching here on our conversations on this car/subject.
BTW the car does look familiar.I remember seeing one just like in the now defunct High Performance Mopar July 1990 publication.
It then had 41,000 miles on the clock and was an estate sale from an elderly woman who was the original owner.
Back then the car was in Clyde NY by Mopar nut Larry De Lisio   and was quoted that a " Hemi is slated for future installation"

The owner at that time had collected all the correct 1957 Hemi and necessary hardware to build the car up to D500 specs.
After looking at the magazine and the E bay listing it appears to be the exact same car.
Who knows what happened after 18 years?? Certainly the owner then had no problem telling people that the car is not a bonafide D500 car.
Looks like the seller today is passing it a a real D500 car
BOOOGUUUSS!!

It's not real! but....if it were:

1957 Dodge Coronet 2dr sedan= $16,800 in #1 condition.
Add 30% for D500 option.
Add 50% for Super D500 option. They tagged E.F.I. onto that, but that would be a whole  different animal....

So, we have a car that should be worth about $21,840 or so.....again for the best one in the world. I love what people think their cars are worth.

Now, does the value change the minute someone (read:sucker) pays that $52,000  amount? Not at all. My friend & long-time customer just sold his fully restored, pride & joy 1956 Packard Patrician 4 door sedan to someone in the United Arab Emirates. He had been pursued relentlessly for his car and didn't want to sell. The book value on his car is $22,000. The new owner pried it out of his hands for $115,000 !!!! That cannot mean that all restored Packard Patrician 4 door sedans will jump to that price level.

Before Leaburn discovered this car was a fake I wrote:

If this car is on the level, offer the book value + what you deem is
highest amount you would offer to snag it for yourself. It's for sale
at a "dealer", so eventually your bid should reach the owner of the car
and he has to decide whether or not to hold out for a pie-in-the-sky
price or take money offered in hand. Good luck!

I now take that back and suggest you find another car or offer much less for this one and set the history straight while it's in your ownership...

Note the exact same fuzzy dice shown in the pic and also in the E bay listing.
The fit of the rear bumper is identical.
Plus inspection sticker in the lower left of the windshield.
One of the hubcaps and wide whites are present in the trunk in the E bay listing.
With the exception of the tach added, engine and wheel  swap it is the same car!!

Yeah, a real barn find....in a heated "barn" from 1990 to 2008.....

Are you saying the engine was swapped Lea? What did the story car have in it?

That could be a real fraud if it wasn't a D500 originally.....

Without verifying the VIN,we should place bids on the car and retract them stating the car is not exactly as listed.
As such a "rare" high profile car it should have more than 4 pictures in the E bay ad.
The seller should do his homework...Actually I should charge  for doing it for him..

Car was purchased by Larry in 1986.He had the intentions of installing the D500 spec'd hemi in it.
Look very closely to the pics of the trunk in the E bay listing.
Under the boxes of parts is clippings from the magazine article glued onto a big piece of cardboard to display at car shows.

Unfortunately, that swap (Poly to Hemi) is very easy and one of my customers is in the process of doing that to a 56. He isn't doing it to deceive or to flip the car to an unsuspecting buyer, he's keeping the car and wants a "clone".

But to offer that car on Ebay with the exact same fuzzy dice on the dash is ludicrious!
Kudos to you Leaburn for the great forensic work!

....CSI Newfoundland ? I can see a hit TV show there ......

The guy (Craig) that just sold it for ~12k.....that I talked to earlier this week in Lyons, NY (the next town to the west of Clyde, NY) told me the former owner did have a poster and that it was still with the car....The former owner took it/displayed it with his car at car shows....He used to frequent the cruise-in, "Sweet Inspirations" up in Fulton, NY. This guy, (Craig) also said that the linkage on the dual carb set-up wasn't stock....but the right one is in the trunk with all the extra parts...The former owner didn't get to install it before he passed away. Craig claimed he got the D500 at a local estate auction...that he had seen the car for years and always lusted after it. When he heard the guy died he went and talked to the widow and she either informed him of the estate auction or just sold it to him outright...not sure exactly what he said now....But this guy that just bought it from Craig (Earl)...that beat me out by literally a few hours...He is not telling the truth at all. He told me over the phone that the car came out of Chicago...and in the ad he says that he's selling it for an elderly man....90 yrs old. Why he's lying about this I 'm not sure. He asked me if I knew about these cars and how much I thought it was worth....Yeah, I love old Mopars...I told him probably 18k or so...He laughed and then told me of the $52,000 offer he just got "that he is going to present to this elderly gentleman" but most likely he will not accept. I then said...your reserve is higher than 52k??...and he said yes...I then said this car is way out of my league and said goodbye. I couldn't believe it....I'm still up...can't sleep again....hmmmm  Well...I feel a little better now....that this car was not born with this Hemi?? But you know, I wouldn't have cared anyway...It's a beautiful solid, straight fin car. That's all that would've mattered to me. I would have enjoyed it that's for sure...for a long time.furyfever2008-09-28 02:15:27
