Your nuetral safety switch is bad.  See the thread about your starting issue!   JOHN!

Little switch up on the brake pedal arm...may have wiggle loose and backed off or is fried and you need an new one.   If your car came with cruise control it may be a different unit and will require one from a car of the same era and with cruise.  If your lucky it may be the simple unit used in most mopar from 60's through the 90's.

What Brian said and possible a bad turn signal switch.  But it's usually only one side.

The neutral safety switch will not have anything to do with your brake lights...but I know it has to do with your starting problem though.

Also as Steve said it may be your turn signal switch, since ma mopar ran all your brake lights, turn signal and running lights through the turnsignal switch.  But as state most fo the time you will then only have brake lights on one side or signals and no brake lights or no running lights but brake lights...been there...

Just to throw another one in....it could be the Hazard warning switch too.   The Fury did that back in the early 90's.

Hazard switch is built into the turn signal switch & is just upstream of the T/S assembly on the 70.   Had to solder jumper wires around the Hazard switch to get the brake lights back.

I'm thinking Mobby's would still have it there too.   Pull the Hazards & see if they work.

Start where everybody says,  Brake switch near the brake pedal & go from there.

I agree with the comments about the switch at the pedal.  However, no one has asked you this - do your signal lights work when the parking lamps are on?  In other words, are your bulbs good?  I've seen bulbs blink but stop when the ligts are turned on.

Just a thought....

Steve,I told ya that John and Nadine have a love-hate realtionship.
Nadine is a nice car--and a daily driver--nothing wrong with that.
Just the bugs she has been getting would have crept up many years ago if the car got the road time it is getting now.
I just read everyone's posts.
Nobody mentioned CHECK THE FUSE.
The "stop lamp" has its own fuse.
Check it,John
Not blown?
 Break out the testlight.
Check for power at the brake light switch at the brake pedal (white wire),then check for power at the pink wire going to to the steering column with brake pedal depressed.Juice going in ok??

Pull the left kickpanel to expose the rear light wire harness.
Test the brown and dark green wires with brake pedal depressed.
If juice is going to the pedal switch and going into the steering column and not going to the wires to the rear harness, then it is the turnsignal switch.

To check your switch remove the two wires then hook a 12V power to one of the terminals then use a test light s and bround the alligator clip and the put the test light to the other terminal....it should light up when the pedal is depressed.  If it doesn't then it's fried.
