De-Ruster stuff!
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:02:23 PM »

De-lurking for a few here....<blows ballast tanks, AAAOOOGHAAA "All hands prepair for surface action stations!"> Sorry...watched "Run Silent, Run Deep" the other night!

Okay, this'll be slightly OT due to Caterpillar Grader content but should apply to our beloved land yachts equally.

I ordered a gallon of that Ultra One deruster stuff from those guys that have Miss Rustydere. It works!  I cleaned the cr@p off of and out of the pony motor tank, filled a plastic bucket up with this stuff and plunked the 1 gallon tank in it for a few days (the rust was pretty thick in places...even after the solvent/nuts and bolts, shake well and dump out routine. It cleaned the surface rust as advertised, most of the deep stuff too. Left the paint alone even! . I strained the rust and chunks out, replunked for another few days and that rusty old gas tank looked pretty good!

Then I rinsed everything out, filled it up with water for one last shake and rinse only to find out I now had a one gallon sprinkler head instead of a fuel tank  ! pin holes EVERYWHERE! Time for plan B....

Oh well. It was a learning experiance and I'll definatly be using this stuff again  Pics will follow as soon as the computer at home is repaired (main CPU fan/heatsink took a major dump...Quad's run HOT! Upgrading to water  )

Well  that is one problem, but it's not Ultra 1's fault.  U1 isn't an acid.  So it doesn't eat away at the metal.  Where you saw those blisters, I am sure is where you got additional drain holes.  But for some things, it's a good idea.  Like my Cowl cover here.  Had I just painted this without derusting the inside, I never would have found the rust breaking through.  That meant going back into the job when the car was done.

Periscope depth please. .  . .

<resurfaces> I kinda expected this poor tank to become a seive so I wasn't really surprised. But still....

I know U1 isn't an acid....that's why I bought it

Right now the brass fuel strainer for the main diesel tank is soaking....going from a crusty green to bright shiney. I am happy with U1's performance.....a bit disgusted at my unobtainium crumbling though!

I visited the Ultra-One website the other day and was amazed with what it can do!  My interest really peaked when I found this:

Tonka No. 44 State Highway Dept. 3in1         Oh Steve...   how well do you know U-1's owner?   That poor old truck would have a forever home here, and in good company!

I wish my visit could allot the time to visit Miss Belvedere Bob.  I'd love to meet that car and spend a few moments around it, knowing how it came to be a celebrity after living underneath a sidewalk for fifty years!

That old truck is just what it is, an object of a passion and hobby of mine.
