I have heard the 3.0 to be a good motor - it is a cast block and head from what I understand, doesn't it?

On my trip east I rented an 08 Ford Explorer and put about 1,000 km on it running around Ontario. It was a 4.6 L and it ran very well, even averaged 11.2 L/100 km or about 25 mpg Cdn. When I picked it up I wasn't too impressed, but after tooling around for 2 weeks I got to like it. Mind you, when I got home and got in my Jeep, I really had to pay attention to the  amount of gas pedal I used. Trying to drive the Jeep like the Ford certainly woke me up after  the long flight.

My '95 Crown Vic also has the 4.6 L engine and being lighter gets around 30 mpg on the highway and has given me zero problems over the last 13 years. So I guess not all Ford engines are bad.

I only ever saw one C with the leaning tower of power.  I wonder what the axle ratio was...

I've never really FUBAR'D an engine.  Dad had a Ford 8-N that only ran on three cylinders due to a bad sleeve that refused to die.

I ran a Land Rover out of oil once, didn't know what the green light on the dash was for cuz it never werked until that day...  oops.  I took the head off and persuaded the piston rings and crank free with a chunk of fence post and a sledge hammer and lots of oil!  After removing the oil pan and finding no metal chunks I buttoned er' back up and kept driving it (with the same copper head gasket...  and seven new quarts of oil)

Those were the dayz...

Oh, Dan, I didn't forget about your cause.  Ford's original 3.0 is a very reliable engine.  It's testimony lives on today in many Ford vehicles.  The old "Vulcan" vin-U OHV engine was used in almost every Ford vehicle barring full-sized trucks!  It has many variants, but the original is still the best Ford has offered in a compact vehicle.  Not unlike GM's 3.1 (except for Foamy's Pontiwack Gwan Am) they run indefinately with proper care.

Actually I stand corrected, I double checked my '70 Fury specs and it looks like the standard for a 6 cyl was 3:23 and you could get 3:55 as an option. The 3:23 was standard for both open and limited diffs.
