Where the heck does this go?
« on: June 24, 2008, 03:58:01 PM »

OK, time for a stupid question. I just replaced the missing windshield washer reservoir on my 1968 Sport Fury. I see where the +12V connector mates to the pump, but I don't know where what appears to be the ground lug connects. I don't recognize this type of terminal.

Help?

Thanks,  guys!

Ahhh  Ground?  There's only 2 wires for the pump.  The OE had the ground built into a rivit in a mounting hole.  If you identified the power wire, then the other has to be ground.  Worst that could happen is the pump would run backwards.

Lets see a pic.

Like Steve said...the original pump would have had a ground wire that ran from the body of the pump up to one of the mounting screws.  The terminal on the bottom of the pump was the power.
The newer pumps don't have a ground built into the body so they have a terminal for power and ground.  All you need to do is run a ground to the body off one of the terminals.

As Steve said...worst that can happen with wiring the pump up is if you get it wrong it will run backwards...switch the power and ground around and it will run forwards...

Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't explain myself properly. I know it's the ground. Given the unique shape of the terminal, I thought there was a specific location designed to accommodate this terminal. That is the place I was trying to find. I know I can ground it to any chassis ground location. I just want to put it where the factory intended it to go.

So, where does it go?

The ground wire on my '70s resevoir goes on one of the sheet metal screws that holds the bottle on to the fender well.  Mine has a round eyelet attachment.

Thanks! The terminal style threw me for a loop. I'll try your suggestion!

Thanks to all for your assistance.

The reason it looks funny is because it fits into the mounting hole in the plastic of the washer bottle.   They usually have to be pried out of the hole in the bottle.
