I think they were a bit homely, but the design grew on you.  It definitely wasn't a "Me Too" look.  I heard they had their share of problems though.  I'd be afraid to buy one because of the parts scarcity POLARACO2008-05-31 18:32:13

Many had their EFI system replaced with a standard carburetor system.
Chrysler's early attempt on EFI was terrible.
Other than that all the mechanicals were shared with the F/M/J platform.
I agree that the trim and body panels are hard to find.
They were very expensive to buy new and few were sold compared to other models being an exclusive car with the Frank Sinatra and other models.

They do kind of grow on you and were pretty plush... probably good
luxo-drivers if converted to carb. My "full-size" 79 Newport and 80
NYer were great cars once the bugs were worked out, same mechanicals
basically.

Compared to the competition, I kinda like the 81-83 Imps.

And what about the last Imps

The very last Imps were overdone & overpriced front wheel drive Dynasty cars with electrical problems.

The VERY last Imps weren't Imps.  They were J.C. Whitney-ized Plymouth Reliant K-cars or AKA: K-imps.
Imps (in my opinion) had RWD which ended in '81
Real Imps ended in '75
"True" Imps ended in '73
Truely real Imps ended in '68 (or '66 by the hard-core).

Commando1,I agree that the last true Imp was in 1968.None of the underpinnings were shared by other Chrysler bodies.
Imperial was the last make of the Chrysler Corporation to use a body on frame construction up until 1966,when all other cars built by Ma were unitized.
1967 saw the unitized construction, but Imperial had its own front stub frame, and rear suspension set up that had a panhard bar.

Back on topic...The J body Imp was Iacocca's attempt to show he recognizes Chrysler's heritage despite abandoning almost everything the company stood for.Give the man credit for saving the company, though.Yet the axe chopped the Imp at the end of 1983.

I like 'em.  Wouldn't mind having one, too.  I think someone said that car would be what Darth Vader would drive, especially if it was all Black.

Imagine the fun you could have by dumping a new small-block based 440 Super Commando engine in one!  http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/hrdp_0803_small_block_crate_engines/mopar_440_small_block_engine.html
