Oh, man.  This is a topic that pushes my buttons.
I could write a 3 page rant on this but it's still before 9:00 AM and I don't want to ruin this day.
I just may come back after 5:00 PM when Happy Hour begins....

Here's an example.
And watch what a firestorm this creates.

I smell smoke, and Scot may have to put out  the fire.
By the time he gets to it,the roof would have caved in from the heat.

It's getting good.  He thinks he can time his 440 by ear and he wonders why it "under performs".  Are people that retarded?

If you have dealt with Bryon before, you would have to say yes.  He's a piece of work but somehow likeable.

He may be right Steve, but his poopty attitude is why young people are not interested in older cars.  If they have to put up with a PITA like that they're gone.

The greatest gift one can give in this hobby is a helping hand to those who don't know.  If we say, "If you don't know where your transmission dipstick is, shove off!," we miss a great opportunity and lose yet another young person to the hobby.

If Kraut doesn't like the questions he should STOP READING!!

Or replying to the threads.
If I do not know the answer,I do not reply with BS thinking I really do know  the answer.
If I am not 100% sure,I will always welcome others chime in to reassure or correct me.

I think I will just have  to laugh to myself at some of the silly questions....or come up with a simple response like "stop and call a mechanic".

Apparently I really ticked some people off, but if they new me they would know I was just having a little fun "poking the bear" to see what would happen, because I'm kind of a snarky smart ass at heart. (If you've ever seen Anthony Bourdain on "No Reservations" on the Travel Channel, I'm just like him....).

It is very nice that lots of guys are interested in old cars, it's just that they get in over their heads so easily when a simple auto shop class at their local community college would fix that problem quickly.

Having been a science teacher for 20+ some years, you just have to learn to let the all of the dumb/stupid/ignorant questions and misconceptions roll off your back... one could easily shoot oneself in despair over the lack of knowledge of science in the general population if you were to let it get to you. Same with knowledge of how old cars work. You just learn to be happy when you can get something of value through to someone who didn't know it before.Angry

The guys asking failed "oil Change 101".   That's why you see butcher jobs.  It's scarrey to see some of the work done.  You can lead the horse to water but. . .

I didin't know much about cars when I got my first classic about 8 years ago.  Sure, I had a '61 Corvair and and a '66 Mustang in high school but I never tore them down and rebuilt them.  I knew how to do basic oil changes, etc.  When I got the Goat about 8 years ago I joined the local chapter of the GTO association and met some really nice older gearheads that took me under my wing and helped me out.  I also got a ton of help/assistance from my neighbor, a fellow gearhead, on both the GTO and the Chrysler.  For me, it was more of a fear of the unknown and not having the confidence to dive into something.  The more things I took apart I realized I could fix them and put them back together and they actually worked.  I would have been lost if it weren't for these guys taking the time to teach me.
